Historically and culturally, the commune of Vals is part of Lauragais, the former "Land of Plenty", linked both to the cultivation of pastel and considered the breadbasket of Languedoc.

Small village of 93 inhabitants located on the right bank of the Hers vive river, between Pamiers and Mirepoix, Vals is a charming town which extends over an area of 413 hectares.

The alternation of forests, meadows and agricultural crops constitutes the major asset of the hillsides of Vals in terms of landscape.

The reputation of Vals rests above all on its church, which has been classified as a historic monument since 1910. In fact, the singularity of its partly rock-hewn church earns the village visits from more than 20 people per year. Embedded in a block of rock, this construction appears extraordinary and mysterious. Inside you can admire superb Romanesque frescoes of Catalan origin. The latter date from the 000th century and have affinities with those of neighboring Spanish Catalonia. Three periods of Jesus' life are illustrated.

The village of Vals is located on the path to Saint Jacques de Compostela known as the Piedmont Pyrenees (GR78) which passes through Aude, Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and joins the route from Arles to Oloron St. Mary.
