One of the emblematic sites of the Séronais, the flowing mills of around two
kilometers, in the commune of La Bastide de Sérou, there were, in the 1843th century, five mills which used the driving force of water coming from the Arize river. The water intake on the Arize and the canal did not have a legal existence until 1854, the date of an injunction which means that everything has been in order since XNUMX.
These five mills had different uses depending on the period. They were flour mills, oil mills, ore mills, sawmills, rope makers, carders, or fullers. They were even used for spinning wool when the Bastide was a center for hosiery. They could combine several functions during the same period. Some included a dwelling house.
“The mill of La Molo Porto”, “mill of the gate” or “mill of the Castle” is located under the gate of Faurie at the foot of the surrounding walls, one of the four gates of the old Bastide from the 1854th century. This mill, municipal property since 3, had XNUMX flour mills and two oil mills but also a KAPLAN type electric turbine still present and to be rehabilitated. He also had a varnish tank for earthenware.
In August 2023, under the leadership of the “Molo Porto” association, the ruins of one of the mills, that of Alzéonville, were cleared of the vegetation that covered them. (See on the association's website)
The mill stream is partly a gentle path which is currently being rehabilitated in order to make it a pedestrian link between the town center and the equestrian center, owned by the municipality.
During these days, the association will offer a conference on the flow of mills and guided tours on site and in the town center.
This will be an opportunity to discuss the link that the population had with water and mills.
