The Natura 2000 site "Gorges de la Frau et Bélesta" is located in the center of the Pyrenees chain straddling 2 departments (Ariège and Aude), it is registered with the Birds Directive

Natura 2000 is the largest network of protected areas in the world!

It is a European label awarded to sites selected for their richness in natural environments and remarkable or threatened animal or plant species on a European scale. These are habitats or species of Community interest.

The site covers a total area of ​​12383 ha and its altitude varies from 498 m to 1929 m.
It concerns all of the communes of Comus in Aude, Fougax and Barrineuf and part of the territory of the communes of Bélesta, Bénaix, Montségur and Prades in Ariège. It is bounded to the north and west by the Plantaurel, to the south by the high chain of the Pyrenees and to the east by the Sault plateau.
Crossed by the Gorges de la Frau, the site is a mixture of rocky and forested slopes. Cathar country, the castle of Montségur sits on a territory rich in history.
Today, the site is characterized by its wild character and hosts a large number of species, mainly avifauna.
