The exceptional site of Lake Montbel and its vast area (570 hectares) are assets for aquatic relaxation, boating, family or sports hiking, fishing, ornithology.

Tourist facilities in Léran and Montbel make it possible to offer a welcome and the practice of leisure activities. Designed primarily for irrigation, this lake has proven to be a prime attraction for lovers of nature and outdoor activity.

Diversified landscapes, rich flora and fauna attract walkers, sports enthusiasts and holidaymakers. Three riverside municipalities surround the lake, Léran to the west, Chalabre to the east on a small part (Aude) and Montbel to the north. The Interdepartmental Institution for the Development of the Montbel Dam (IIABM) is the owner and manager of the lake. It is she who has the power to authorize access to water and must be consulted for any project related to the site.

High forests and coppices of various species coexist, sheltering many qualities of flowers. Some points of view are reminiscent of Canadian landscapes but a few islets by contrast would evoke Africa, when the waters drop at the end of summer.

An observatory has been set up by the Association des Naturalistes de l'Ariège, in order to better understand and observe the many birds that live together on this site.

The fish species are also very varied and the large predators (carps, catfish, etc.) have earned the lake a good reputation among European audiences.
