The delimitation between the two ancient parishes of Fougax and Barrineuf had respected the medieval limits of the two former lordships of Lévis until the beginning of the 17th century, the time of their reunion. The suffix "ax", from the Latin "asqua", translates the major characteristic of the village: water, omnipresent in the basins, wash houses and fountains, materializing the three main municipal boundaries during its underground resurgences.
The territory of Fougax and Barrineuf benefits from several labels:
– NATURA 2000, attesting to a site of community interest under the Birds Directive,
– a future classification within the future National Underground Nature Reserve of Ariège due to the richness and faunal diversity of its cave environments,
– without forgetting of course its integration into the Grand Site Montségur scope currently undergoing certification.
Fougax et Barrineuf is also the birthplace of the cantor of Ariège, Adelin Moulis, poet, folklorist, storyteller, historian, ardent defender of the Oc language in the last century; a museum space dedicated to his work is currently being created.

The Frau gorges: for around five km, a stony and winding path crosses the gorges. At the most spectacular moment, you will be overlooked by more than four hundred meters of dizzying rocks.
►From the town of Fougax and Barrineuf at the bottom of the village, take the road towards the gorges until the end and continue on foot.
