Bénaix is a rural commune which has 151 inhabitants in 2020. Located in the east of Ariège, the commune is part, on a historical and cultural level, of the Pays d'Olmes, a mecca of Cathar tragedy combining landscapes of extreme diversity.

Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Saint-Nicolas stream, the Pelail stream and various other small streams. The town has a remarkable natural heritage: a Natura 2000 site (the “Frau and Bélesta gorges”) and two natural areas of ecological, fauna and flora interest.

Neolithic site of the Cross of Morenci: erected at an altitude of 893 m and carved into the sandstone of the country, its particularity lies in the human face sculpted in high relief and below, an enigmatic 8 which can represent the acronym of the infinity. The shape of the cross seems to be later than the sculptures and perhaps explains the dating of 1780. Vandalized in March 1972, only the 8 is still visible. We can barely see the grip on the face.
►From Lavelanet, take the direction of Perpignan and take the first road on the right with a hairpin after the roundabout. Follow the direction of Bénaix then Morenci.

Roc de la Fougasse: perfect circle 1,10m in diameter. This rock was certainly used as a sacrificial stone for ceremonies but no explanation has really been given.
►50m before the plateau, follow a small signposted path on foot which goes down to the right. 30m before the source, turn right into the woods to reach the stone.
