Legend has it that the locals had this bridge built by the Devil, who demanded payment from the soul of the first person to cross it. The ancients knew how to do business there: they brought a cat across!
But history tells us that the bridge was in fact built in 1836 at the same time as the mill attached to it. The polytechnician behind the project wanted to experiment with a water wheel that plunged directly into the whirlpool of the river to operate the mill. The latter was never operational.
Beelzebub or the brilliant engineer, you will make your choice, but either way you will enjoy superb views of the banks of the Ariège, very steep in these places.
