Old high mountain Occitan village on the edge of the Pays de Sault and the Aude

Number of inhabitants: 320 Distances: Ax-les-Thermes 18 km Bonascre 20 km Small mountain town in the Cathar country and isolated village of Haut Foix, Montaillou is perched on a ridge in the Pyrenees, crossed by several streams including that of the Coume du Moulin or even that of Prade. The history of this village is largely linked to Catharism, transcribed in the famous work of Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie Montaillou, village occitan. Montaillou is also crossed by the Chemin des Bonshommes (GR 36) and is enhanced by its church and the ruins of its castle, built by the lords of Alion at the end of the 107th century. Opening hours of the town hall: Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 13:30 p.m. to 17 p.m.
