The old fortified village in the heart of the Vicdessos valley

Municipality of Miglos Altitude: 1 m
Location: a few kilometers from the towns of Niaux and Auzat and on the edge of the Siguer valley, above Capoulet-et-Junac and bordering some towns such as Larnat, Lapège and Niaux.
Number of inhabitants: 114
Distances: Vicdessos 10 km - Tarascon-sur-Ariège 11 km Miglos is a small town known above all for its fortified castle, now ruined and perched above the village.
Nearby is the Saint-Hilaire d'Arquizat church. The two sites were classified as historic monuments in 1987 and 1973 respectively. The Miglos valley was a county administrative district before the year 1830. It was therefore one of the points of support for the counts of Foix in the development of their county in the 400th-XNUMXth centuries: a church was built there dedicated to Saint Hilaire, a saint associated with the Carcassonne count family which gave birth to that of the counts de Foix, and a castle, given in custody to a family of lords who took the name of Miglos. Perched above the Vicdessos valley, the old castle boasts impressive ruins. It was modified several times, rebuilt in the XNUMXth century and inhabited until the XNUMXth century. In the summer of XNUMX, during the revolts against the large owners of woods and forests who limited the old usage rights needed by the poorest, XNUMX men and women from the valley sequestered the blacksmith lord of Miglos and forced him to to cede his property titles to the forests, while burning his castle.
Of the 5 villages today that are part of Miglos, Arquizat, Axiat, Norrat, Norgeat and Baychon, only Baychon is not mentioned in the Middle Ages. But above its houses, in the middle of the cliff, you can spot the fortified cave of the same name (XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries), castle-barracks of the Counts of Foix.
Town hall opening hours: Friday: 14 p.m. to 18 p.m.
