Village of character in the heart of the Vicdessos valley

Municipality of Lapège - Altitude: 991 m
Location: above the villages of Niaux and Capoulet-et-Junac.
Number of inhabitants: 23
Distances: Tarascon-sur-Ariège 12 km - Vicdessos 16 km Lapège is one of the most remarkable villages in upper Ariège for its old houses. We admire typical houses, with their coated walls, slate roofs, bread ovens corbelled towards the outside and wooden terraces in the sun on the first floor. Even if they give the impression of being old, these houses mostly date from the beginning of the XNUMXth century because the fire then ravaged the village.
Between these houses, the narrow, stone-paved streets, “the calades”, wind throughout the village as they were when it was populated by peasants and shepherds. When you climb the road towards Lapège in the sharpest curve on the right, the road intersects the old cemetery of the church of a deserted medieval village called Laburat. This village depended half on the lords of Quié and was abandoned at the end of the Middle Ages during the great crisis. It is only at this time that Lapège appears in the charters and it is possible that the habitat moved from one site to another.
Another village called Onat may have existed a little above the current Lapège, but today we find only woods, barns and meadows. During World War II, many of these barns housed fleeing people crossing to Spain.
Town hall opening hours: Tuesday: 14 p.m. to 17:30 p.m. and Thursday: 13:30 p.m. to 17 p.m.
