Thermal and cultural village between Aude and Donezan

Municipality of Carcanières Altitude: 1 m Location: in Donezan, not far from the Col du Garabeil, a mountain pass at an altitude of 176 m, located in the municipality of Le Bousquet in the Pays de Sault Number of inhabitants: 1262 Distances: Quérigut 79 km-Ax-les-Thermes 2 km The origin of the name of the village can have two meanings: first of all from Gascon Carcanét, which means gorge, or from Occitan Carcanhaira, meaning a quarrelsome agglomeration . Carcanières therefore dominates the Aude Valley and is the easternmost village of Donezan. Its heart has a very well preserved village architecture, and the warm waters of its hamlet Carcanières-les-Bains and its 60 springs led to a thermal activity which ended in the early sixties. You can contemplate its Church, built in 13 but very rarely open, or its Notre-Dame-de-Donezan Abbey. The town is located. Apart from that, one can find various springs and fountains within the village, which have always been essential for the agricultural activities and the feeding of the inhabitants.
