The oldest pool in the city

Until around the middle of the 1241th century, the spa center of Ax or “Barry des Bains” was concentrated around the Bassin des Ladres, with the steam rooms on one side and the cannons on the other. In 1260, probably to compensate for the damage of a fire, the Count of Foix granted large tax privileges to Ax. It only became more popular and the place between the walls became rare. The waters of Ax in free use were used to wash the wool, to scald the pig, to make the soup, to look after. Founded in 1979 by Count Roger IV of Foix at the request of Saint Louis, the Ax hospital received, among others, soldiers returning from leprosy from the Crusades. The basin still bears the name of Ladres or “Lepers”. It has been classified as a historical monument since XNUMX. Today tourists do not fail to dip their feet in the basin, attributing it relaxing and healing properties.
