Village of character in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees and Sédour

Municipality of Arignac Altitude: 512 m Location: near Tarascon-sur-Ariège Number of inhabitants: 700 Distances: Tarascon-sur-Ariège 2 km-Ax-les-Thermes 27 km At the foot of the Sédour massif, is the mountain village of Arignac. The limestone relief south of Arignac, was excavated a rock shelter (called Rode) which contained prehistoric hearths dating from the final Magdalenian and perhaps older. Throughout the territory of the town, numerous scattered archaeological discoveries demonstrate ancient frequentation with vestiges of protohistory and antiquity. Arignac is part of one of the municipalities of Sabarthès also including the country of Haute Ariège upstream of the country of Foix. The elevation of the village is 470 m in height. Historically, the old village of Arignac, of medieval origin, is always grouped around a glacial lock which carried the castle but which today is surmounted only by a clock. The Sainte-Marie church, which still exists, is known from the beginning of the 5th century, as are the lords of Arignac, a faithful family of the counts of Foix. Another church was located at the southern entrance to the village. Dedicated to Saint-Pierre, it is now destroyed and replaced by a cross on a small summit. In the charters, we wrote Arignac in the form Aisnac or Esnac. The northern slope of Sédour mountain, near Arignac, housed - in the 45th and 14th centuries - a large gypsum quarry. Very close to Arignac, the hamlet of Ménac is mentioned for the first time in the 17th century, when it had 9 taxable households, while in Arignac, there were 12, including a mill and an iron forge. Among the monuments of Arignac, you can see the Tower of Castella, image of the historic and emblematic monument of Tarascon-sur-Ariège, whose town is near the village. Opening hours of the town hall: Monday and Friday: 14 p.m. to 17 p.m. Wednesday: XNUMX a.m. to XNUMX p.m. and XNUMX p.m. to XNUMX p.m.
