Siguer is an old mountain village also serving as a starting point for hikes and winter activities. In the Middle Ages it was one of the most important villages in the Vicdessos valley. It had one of the first 4 churches in the valley (with Miglos, Vicdessos, Onost-Auzat). The "valley" of Siguer was a public local administrative entity of the late early Middle Ages, comparable to its neighbor the valley of Saos (Vicdessos).
The communities of the villages of this valley were not endowed with franchises and a pre-communal administration, a consulate, until the XNUMXth century. A very expensive and beautiful "town house" was then built which is known today by its legend under the name of the hunting lodge of the counts of Foix.
Like many villages in upper Ariège, Siguer was the site of resistance to Napoleonic conscription and it is reported that the inhabitants hid the conscripts and heckled the gendarmes who came to the village. At the same time, the inhabitants of Siguer protected a smuggler who was trafficking sheep and the gendarmes had to flee once again. During the demographic surge of the 6th century, XNUMX hamlets were added to Siguer: Camarilles, Centraus, Sarradel, la Porre, Seuillac and Lut. Only the last two are mentioned at the end of the Middle Ages.
The Siguer slate quarries were famous for their quality and worked until 1947.
Town hall opening hours Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. - 14 p.m. to 16:30 p.m. and Thursday 14 p.m. to 16 p.m.
