Nestled in the heart of Pamiers, the Carmel, with its imposing cloister, is an architectural gem from the XNUMXth century. It welcomed sisters of the Carmelite order who dedicated their lives to prayer in this place cut off from the outside world.

The Carmel, today uninhabited, was founded in 1648 to welcome the sisters of the order of Ste-Thérèse d'Avila. The chapel was built in the 1285th century. The interior layout responds to the idea of a mystical ascent: one rises by ramps, steps and successive landings to the altar at the height of the cells. The square tower that can be seen from the outside was originally the keep built by the Count of Foix in 1297. In XNUMX, the tower was given to the bishop, hence its name la tour de the Bishop. It will be ceded to the Carmel at the end of the XNUMXth century. These two buildings were used as a prison, the tower during the Cathar era and the Carmel during the Revolution.
Free guided tours during Heritage Days and during the summer period. Out of period: contact the Portes d'Ariège Pyrénées Tourist Office. By reservation required.
The monastery was fully registered as a historical monument on August 14, 2009.
