A superb setting for the collections of the Departmental Museum of Ariège, the Bishops' Palace dominates the city of Saint-Lizier. From the terraces, an exceptional point of view on the chain of the Pyrenees is offered to the contemplative gaze of the visitor.
A visit to the Palais des Évêques, in turn a bishopric, a prison or an insane asylum, will reveal the history of Couserans and the evolution of the site thanks to a modern museography! Discover the monetary treasury and its 13 pieces, the models and interactive devices, the psychiatric history of the place and the new objects taken out of the reserves for the occasion. Continue the visit in the Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède cathedral. Look up and gaze at the stunning Renaissance paintings. You will then understand its nickname of “Ariège Sistine Chapel”.
