The Bélesta forest is made up of silver fir trees. For many centuries, the inhabitants of Bélesta, Fougax and l'Aiguillon had this precious privilege of obtaining supplies of wood for their various uses: heating, construction, etc.

It is a magnificent fir forest covering more than 1000 ha which extends to the Sault plateau. Made up of conifers, it is one of the most beautiful in Ariège. Used very early, its wood was used in the 1619th century for the construction of Mediterranean ships. It was used under Colbert (1683 -XNUMX) for the construction of boat masts in the Toulon shipyards. The transport of wood was carried out by water from Quillan sur l'Aude.

Until the 19th century, it also supplied charcoal to the Catalan-style forges. Partly communal, you can practice it on marked trails.
